The Utah Assistive Technology Program (UATP) is holding a FREE online interactive training on Wednesday, May 6, 2009; from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. Jill Andrus, CCC-SLP, Speech-Language Pathologist at Edith Bowen Laboratory School and Clinical Supervisor/Instructor at Utah State University, will present Assistive Technology for Alternative and Augmentative Communication.
Approximately 1.3% of all individuals (i.e., more than 3.5 million Americans) have such significant communication disabilities that they cannot rely on their natural speech to meet their daily communication needs. Without access to speech, these individuals are severely restricted in their communication and participation in all aspects of life – education, employment, family, and community. The development of augmentative and alternative communication strategies offers great potential to enhance the communication of individuals with complex communication needs.
This training is an introduction to Alternative and Augmentative Communication. Attendees will learn the following: What is AAC? What is the goal of AAC? Who uses AAC? What types of AAC are available? Where does the funding come from for the AAC devices?
